"This map is the most important, being the first European map to be published with place-names in the original Japanese form. Reland, an oriental scholar at the University of Utrecht, based this work on Japanese manuscripts owned by the Dutch East India Company. Nagasaki was the site of the Dutch trading colony which was virtually the only point of contact between Japan and Europe throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Reland's work, and derivatives of it, remained for almost a hundred years the standard European map of the inaccessible kingdom of Japan."
    Made in Engand.
